The Free State is South Africa's grain belt — a high, open plateau between the Drakensberg and the Karoo, sown in sunflower and maize, and quartered every winter by enormous flights of the Columba guinea, the African rock pigeon.

From mid-March, when the first fields are cut, until early September, the birds work the stubble at dawn and dusk in numbers that most British guns will never have seen at home — three thousand cartridges a day is normal, five thousand is a good one.

We host parties of four to six guns at a small handful of lodges between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg, on land that has been shot the same way for forty years. Every booking is confirmed personally before you fly.
